Pile at Sears Demolition Site
Pile at Sears Demolition Site
oil on panel
2003

The series entitled Demolition Sites was created in response to the transition occurring in Detroit’s physical and historical landscape. These paintings aim to document the fleeting state of specific buildings; ultimately capturing a moment of a location’s appearance between what it had been and what the place will become.

View of Demolition Site at Woodward and Sears documents the end of a building that served as the first major department store (Sears) in Detroit. Generations later, I experienced it as a St. Vincent De Paul thrift store before it became vacant.
